Project aim
Chemical contamination of marine sediment and waters adjacent to Antarctic Research Station refuse disposal and sewage outfalls represent significant ecological risk. Multiple lines of evidence using tissue residues and histological biomarkers will be used to link current waste disposal to animal health. Alteration in tissues and organs in key fish and shellfish will identify the severity of response, and species most susceptible, to bio-available pollutants. Species specific biomarkers will provide a suite of in situ bio-monitoring tools to determine risk, and evaluate remediation success.
