Project aim
The ocean circulation along the continental margin of Antarctica remains poorly known, primarily due to the lack of long-term measurements of ocean currents over the continental slope. These currents form the southern limb of a large clockwise gyre in the deep basin between Antarctica and Australia. The gyre carries new Antarctic Bottom Water northward and influences the sea ice and biological productivity in the region. This joint US-Australian experiment will collect the first long-term direct velocity measurements of this important branch of the Southern Ocean circulation.
