Project information
Project aim
Sea ice algae are a crucial component of the Southern Ocean ecosystem, providing food for herbivores such as Antarctic krill, and also contributing to the overall ecosystem primary production. This project will develop a model-based approach for estimating sea ice algae distribution and will contribute to our current understanding of the processes governing the spatial and temporal variations in sea ice algae distribution in the East Antarctic sector of the Southern Ocean.

Sea ice is an important structuring element of Antarctic marine ecosystems and provides a vast habitat for ice-associated algae forming communities in different horizons of the ice floes.
