Project aim

Expeditioners to Antarctica experience low vitamin d levels and increased bone loss during the winter months because of the lack of sunlight that is needed by the body to produce Vitamin D. This randomized trial involving expeditioners will investigate if these and other metabolic changes can be reduced using a vitamin D supplement. If effective then a regular supplement can help ensure the skeleton is preserved during expeditions. Information from this study can also be used to prevent bone loss in other situations of limited sun exposure such as space travel or residing in nursing homes.
