Project aim
Clean up of Antarctic contaminated waste disposal sites and petroleum spills is required under the Madrid Protocol, unless the clean up process itself creates a greater environmental hazard. The monitoring of clean up procedures is of utmost importance in measuring the progress and ultimate success of site remediation. Highly specialised and sensitive techniques are being developed to monitor and model the fate and impact of petroleum contaminated sites in subantarctic and Antarctic locations. Such modelling and monitoring will greatly assist ongoing petroleum clean-up operations at Casey and Macquarie Island.
