Project aim
One of the aims of the Human Impacts Program is to understand the natural variability of coastal Antarctic marine communities and how they might relate to the varying environmental conditions of light, sea ice, water quality and sedimentation to assess the effects of human impacts. This project aims to model near-shore sea ice breakout at local scales using GIS and remote sensing imagery. The spatial model will contribute to a better understanding of the relation between sea ice and benthic habitats for the Windmill Islands. Satellite imagery combined with ground observations will be used to calibrate and validate the model.
