Project aim

Heard Island's pristine and rapidly changing environment makes it a relevant and exciting location to study the effects of global climate change on its subantarctic vegetation. This study will use satellite imagery to map vegetation types. Fuzzy classification algorithms will be developed and applied to quantify and visualise uncertainty related to vegetation transition zones. The second aim of this study is to use multi-temporal satellite imagery to detect and visualise changes in vegetation types. Remote sensing techniques provide automated, up-to-date, and non-invasive means to map and monitor remote areas like Heard Island.
