Project information
Project aim
Pb is widely used in human activities and has been found at relatively high concentrations in benthic sediments in the Windmill Islands. There are three main sources of lead (Pb) in the Windmill Islands: wastes from the abandoned tip at old Casey Station, wastes from the abandoned Wilkes Station and Pb from the natural environment. Source identification is often possible using stable Pb isotope and mass balance techniques. This project aims to identify and quantify sources of Pb in the Windmill Islands, by determining the relative proportion of Pb from Wilkes Station (once US operated) and Casey Station (Australian operated).

Lead (Pb) isotope ratios were measured in the marine macroalga Iridaea cordata collected from four locations … in the Windmill Islands, East Antarctica. Based on the masses of thalli collected, samples analysed in … this study were likely to be a mixture of one and two year old thalli.
