Dating key events in the sub-Antarctic Neogene

Project aim

Macquarie and Heard Islands were inscribed on the World Heritage List because of a series of geological features unique separately to each island. While the uniqueness has been widely recognised for many years, it has not been documented fully, and many aspects of the evolution of the islands are not yet fully documented. This project aims to establish the age of some of the key events that made the islands what they are, using microfossils in sediments, and radioactive elements occurring naturally in the volcanic rocks.
