Project aim
This project will collect meteorological and glaciological data that are required to select, operate and maintain an ice airfield suitable for intercontinental aircraft. Apart from specifications including the length, width, slope, etc. of the airfield, it is also essential that the airfield be strong enough for large aircraft. This requires that the temperature is cold enough so that the ice never melts - even if it refreezes, it will be weakened to the point that a large aircraft could break through.
