Project information
Project aim
The ecological sustainability of fisheries is one of the most important tasks facing management of the marine environment. Success in this area is contingent on management decisions being based on clear, operational objectives and reliable assessment methods that are robust against uncertainties in our understanding of how the ecosystem functions, measurement error and natural variation. This project aims to provide the tools for developing management procedures for antarctic and subantarctic fisheries. These tools will include a flexible set of ecosystem and food web models of the antarctic and subantarctic regions to enable the testing of management procedures for fisheries before they are put into practice. Other tools under development consist of software to enable the assessment of status and yield of commercial species as well as assessment of the status of the ecosystem. Apart from using data already available in the Antarctic scientific literature, this project will co-ordinate a fisheries based research program to obtain ecosystem and fisheries data in conjunction with the licencees in the Heard Island fishery.
