Project aim
Sediment and water budgets for selected lakes in the Larsemann Hills, Eastern Antarctica. The lakes of the Larsemann Hills are almost all freshwater and have a number of characteristics that distinguish them from the lakes in other Antarctic Oases. Evidence shows that they pre-date the Last Glacial Maximum and that they have not changed markedly in response to any global warming trends. With the level of human activity in the area likely to increase with the development of a Russian ice runway concern has been raised about possible adverse human impacts. This project intends to establish the present hydrologic and sediment budgets for selected lakes in the area so that any future changes can be monitored.
