Project information
Project aim
Analysis of polar ice cores is commonly used to produce records of climatic conditions in the past. Cores from Law Dome have already been used to make a uniquely high resolution record of temperatures over the past 700 years however further work using spectral analysis of trace isotope ratio and trace chemical data from existing core material is limited by core fracturing in a brittle zone between 100 and 120 m depth. This project aims to fill in the gap and produce a contimuous record using either thermal drilling (which is known to produce unfractured core) or an improved technique of mechanical drilling. The project takes advantage of people being at Law Dome for other work (ASAC 1172) and shares resources with this project.
The cable used for deep drilling and borehole logging at DSS on Law Dome is no longer required for further logging. The cable can be used for the AMISOR project in 2000/2001.
