Project information
Project aim
Data will be collected on the physical flow characteristics, mass balance, sub-glacial topography and recent fluctuations of a Heard Island glacier. The potential for dating land and ice surfaces with tephrochronology (geochemical correlation of volcanic ash layers) will also be investigated. The data will be used to construct and validate a numerical model of the glacier. The modelling will contribute to our understanding of climatic changes by deriving a climate-proxy record for a remote and sensitive area.

Geophysical inverse methods are used to calculate the basal motion of a glacier. They are applied to a one-dimensional forward model that can be linearized to make the analysis simpler. The inverse method finds a solution that fits the data within a given error.
