Project aim

The convergence of crustal plates generates mountain chains such as the Himalayas. Whereas we can directly see what is happening in the upper crust during such events, we can only infer what is happening in the deep crust by using geophysical methods or looking at areas of the crust that were once at depth but have now been brought to the surface. The Oygarden Group - Stillwell Hills coastline is a tilted crustal block that spectacularly exposes how the lower crust behaved during continental convergence some 1000 million years ago. We wish to study this section to understand how the lower crust is behaving now, so that we can predict how catastrophic events, such as earthquakes, may initiate, and how the lower crust flows when great stress is imposed upon it.
