Project aim
This study aims to develop an acoustic census technique which will improve our current surveys of the antarctic pack ice seals. These seals are an important component of the Antarctic ecosystem. They are long lived mammals, have large populations and must remain within the sea ice zone. Being top order predators they will respond quickly if there are any changes occurring lower in the food chain within the Antarctic. In fact they are one of the few top order predators which can be studied directly and so are important indicator species for us to monitor the long-term stability of the Southern Ocean ecosystem.
