Project information
Project aim
This project will define the location of the outer margin
of the Antarctic ice sheet by analysis of large numbers of
satellite radar images using computer-based edge detection
techniques. The aim is to derive the current rate of change
of the ice sheet extent and associated rate of iceberg production.
This information will also establish a baseline data set against
which future change can be assessed. A by-product of the analysis
process is expected to be information on the distribution and
pattern of large crevasses and rifts present in the ice shelves
and glacier tongues.

The current shape and rate of change of the margins of the Antarctic ice sheet are … poorly known. Since polar regions are inhospitable, remotely sensed images … provide an invaluable data source for studying the ice margin.
