Leader: Dr Ian Allison
Deputy Leader: Dr Tony Worby
Cargo Supervisor: Dr Vicky Lytle
Comments: Polynya study off Mertz Glacier at about 145 deg E. The vessel departed from Port Arthur for the polynya study site without returning to Hobart. The voyage also deployed moorings and delivered biologists (for seal and penguin programs) and a small quantity of essential supplies and mail to Macquarie Island.
V2, Aurora Australis
Last updated:
Purpose of voyage: Davis Resupply, Deploy Summer Ex
Leader: Mr Warren Papworth
Deputy Leader: Mrs Chris Woolley
Comments: The Voyage conducted an ice edge resupply of Davis station, delivered approximately 650,000 lt of SAB to Davis, an AS350B/BA helicopter (for recovery on Voyage 6) and backloaded available RTA cargo from Davis. Summer expeditioners were also delivered to Davis and Mawson - at Mawson by helicopter over an extended range. Two Sikorsky S76 helicopters were carried on the vessel for the round trip. The voyage was extended by the diversion of the vessel to the Mawson ice edge before returning to Hobart.
V2.1, Kapitan Khlebnikov
Last updated:
Purpose of voyage: Deliver fuel and Changeover
Leader: Dr Sandra Potter
Comments: The Kapitan Khlebnikov is expected to deliver about 930,000 L of station fuel (SAB), fresh food supplies and limited quantities of industrial gases, kerosene and petrol to Casey. The voyage will also deliver summer expeditioners and changeover winter personnel at Macquarie Island and Casey. The vessel carries one Australian registered helicopter, and it's use will be limited to close ship to shore operations at Casey. Use of the foreign registered helicopter carried on board is not authorised. Expeditioners should note that cargo space on the vessel is very limited.

The S76 helicopters will be deployed at Mawson, and will then fly to Davis (after V4 leaves Mawson on 9 January) to provide science support until their recovery on Voyage 6. Programs include multichannel seismic survey, sediment core collection, studies into the depositional history on the continental slope and rise, and the collection of data to obtain a regional paleogeographic and paleoenvironmental view. The studies are to be undertaken off the Antarctic coast between the Dibble and Ninnis Glaciers, subject to ice conditions. Italian participants in the voyage are to transfer to the MV Polar Duke before the Tangaroa returns to New Zealand. AAD cargo for V5.1 should have been delivered to the Kingston Store by 6/12/99.
