Comments

Well the rumours were true – there will be a lot less shampoo needed on this ship after the head shaving fundraiser held last night. Hair was lost and beards were shaved to raise money for Camp Quality which supports children living with cancer. This voyage has been one of ups (anticipation of station arrivals) and downs (long naps between stations). We are now back on the ‘up’ with Mawson almost in sight. Last night we moved smoothly through open water punctuated with only a few bergy bits, visibility reduced by falling snow. Our clocks went back another hour last night (now 5 hours behind Hobart time) which means that we are finally on Mawson time. This morning we are pushing our way through close pack ice that extends as far as we can see, with large icebergs visible in the distance. Just after morning tea we turned south to make our way through the ice to Mawson. Rosters have now been drawn up for refueling and resupply tasks, pre-arrival briefings are complete and we are waiting to see Mawson emerge on the horizon. While still living the dream out here – we are now also very aware of the complex job that we have ahead of us at Mawson and are prepared to shift our focus from the afternoon matinee movie or that great novel to the tasks at hand! Cheers, Nicki, Rob and Peter.
