V1, Aurora Australis

Purpose of voyage: Davis Resupply, LIDAR, Summer in

Comments: The voyage will depart from Port Arthur, Tasmania after loading (incl 1.2mL bunkers)at Hobart and the completion of scientific equipment calibration at Port Arthur. After deploying sediment traps south of Tasmania the vessel will proceed to Davis for station resupply including 640000 litres SAB and deliver LIDAR equipment and summer expeditioners. The ship will then deploy expeditioners at Mawson by S76 helicopter, before they return to Davis. The vessel will continue to Heard Island to deploy and retrieve summer expeditioners, and to recover Squirrel helicopters left there on an earlier voyage. Program supervisors will be required to meet the cost of expeditioner travel from Fremantle, and for the freight of cargo that needs to be discharged at Fremantle for transhipment to Hobart or elsewhere. Comments: The vessel departed Fremantle, WA at 0800 local on 8 October for Heard Island to deploy summer expeditioners, support equipment and two AS350BA helis.

Comments: The voyage will resupply Macquarie Island using AS350BA helicopters. 200000 litres of SAB will be delivered. Wintering personnel will be exchanged before the vessel proceeds into the sea ice off Casey to undertake Marine Science activities. The vessel should then reach fly-off range of Casey and deploy summer scientists before returning to Hobart.

Purpose of voyage: Heard Island, M & D Changeover

Comments: The voyage departed from Fremantle and transferred field personnel at Heard Island before conducting the exchange of winter personnel at Mawson (by Sikorsky S76A helicopter from the ice edge) and then Davis. During the Davis changeover the vessel moved to Sansom Island to provide support to the AMISOR program, before calling at Davis to complete personnel changeover. Program managers were required to meet the cost of expeditioner travel to Fremantle for departure, and for the cost of shipment of voyage cargo delivered to the Kingston Store after the nominated cargo cut-off date.

Comments: The voyage undertakes the resupply of Casey station including the delivery of 720,000 litres of SAB, the changeover of winter personnel and the deployment and retrieval of summer expeditioners. Limited AS350BA helicopter support will be available at the station during the resupply period. The following schedule anticipates the use of the Aurora Australis to provides assistance in the Polar Bird's return to open water after resupplying the station. Comments: The voyage will complete a range of Marine Science activities off the Mawson Coast, and off the Amery Ice Shelf before calling at Davis to retrieve summer personnel and helicopters prior to returning to Hobart. Science equipment calibration will be undertaken at Mawson. (Marine Science activities were interrupted when the Aurora Australis was required to provide assistance in the Polar Bird's attempt to reach Casey, complete the station resupply and return to open water.)

Comments: The voyage will undertake the Mawson resupply before completing the changeover of personnel and resupply at Zongshan station. After visiting Sansom Island the Polar Bird will deliver and retrieve Davis cargo and personnel before proceeding to the Heard and McDonald Islands to retrieve the summer field party and equipment. The Polar Bird will carry barges and 2 x AS350BA helicopters to support activities.cargo. Priority will be given to Heard Island and Mawson RTA cargo.
