A Raman depolarization lidar was deployed at Cape Grim, Australia (40.7°S, 144.7°E), at the northern edge of the Southern Ocean from July 2013 to February 2014 from which we determine cloud boundaries, cloud phase, ice virga, and cloud effective top heights.

Gravity wave momentum fluxes above and around Macquarie Island using ACCESS modelling AMOS/ARCCSS national conference 2016, Melbourne, Australia, 8-11 February 2016, 2016 (Ref: 15794)
Category 3: Poster

Missing gravity wave drag near 60 degrees south has been proposed as the cause of the common cold bias in modelled southern polar stratospheric temperatures [McLandress et al. 2012]. Potential gravity wave momentum sources around those latitudes, such as jets…

The ice-core record of volcanism: Status and future directions European Geosciences Union General Assembly 2016, Vienna, Austria, 17-22 April 2016, 2016 (Ref: 15800)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

Radiative forcing resulting from stratospheric aerosols produced by major volcanic eruptions is a dominant driver of climate variability in the Earth's past.

Direct evidence for significant deglaciation across the Weddell Sea embayment during MeltWater Pulse-1B Geophysical Research Abstracts, European Geosciences Union (EGU) General Assembly 2015, Vienna, Austria, 12-17 April 2015, 2015 (Ref: 15722)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

During the last deglaciation (21,000 to 7,000 years ago) global sea level rise was punctuated by several abruptmeltwater spikes triggered by the retreat of ice sheets and glaciers world-wide. However, questions regarding therelative timing…

An investigation of discrete cosmic radio sources using an imaging riometer at Davis, Antarctica 13th Australian Space Science Conference, Sydney, Australia, September 30 - October 2, 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15688)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

The Southern Hemisphere Imaging Riometer Experiment (SHIRE) is a phased array of radio receivers that observes the Antarctic sky at 38 MHz. It detects ionospheric absorption of cosmic radio noise near an altitude of 90km and is used to study the aurora and other high-latitude ionospheric phenomena.

Sensitivity of the Antarctic amphipod Paramoera walkeri to diesel and fuel oil: Lethal and behavioural impacts Strategic Science in Antarctica Conference, Hobart, Australia, 24-26 June 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15568)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

One of the serious threats to the Antarctic marine ecosystem is the release of large volumes of petroleum fuel. Numerous fuel spill incidents have occurred and risks of a major spill are increasing due to continued expansion of human activity in the Antarctic region.

Changes in microbial functional genes as indicators of soil health and their response to fuel contamination in Antarctica Thesis, Bachelor of Science with Honours, University of Tasmania, Tasmania, 2013 (Ref: 15542)
Authors:
Category 3: Thesis, higher degree

Terrestrial fuel spills in Antarctica commonly occur on ice-free land around research stations as the result of human activities. Successful clean-up of spills not only requires appropriate remediation strategies and technologies that are effective in cold climates…

Microbes as indicators of soil health in Antarctica Strategic Science in Antarctica Conference, Hobart, Australia, 24-26 June 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15543)
Category 3: Poster

Several fuel spills have occurred near Australia’s Antarctic stations, associated with the use of SAB diesel for power generation. This has resulted in significant petroleum hydrocarbon contamination in soils.

Assessing the toxicity of dispersed and weathered fuels on Antarctic marine invertebrates Strategic Science in Antarctica Conference, Hobart, Australia, 24-26 June 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15384)
Category 3: Poster

Fuel spills in Antarctic waters are increasingly likely with the rise in shipping in the region related to tourism and research activities, both of which require and transport large quantities of fuel. While fuel dispersants are not currently used in the management of fuel spills in Antarctica…

Ecology and management of invasive Poa annua on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island XXXIII SCAR Biennial meeting and open science conference, Auckland, New Zealand, 25-28 August 2014, 2014 (Ref: 15506)
Category 3: Poster

Poa annua is the most widespread alien species in the sub-Antarctic, occurring on all major island groups and is invasive and spreading on the Antarctic Peninsula. P. annua colonises areas disturbed by human activity, seal wallows, penguin rookeries and glacial moraines.

The Use of Microbial Gene Abundance in the Development of Fuel Remediation Guidelines in Polar Soils Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management, 2014 (Ref: 15472)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Terrestrial fuel spills in Antarctica commonly occur on ice?free land around research stations as the result of human activities. Successful spill clean?ups require appropriate targets that confirm contaminated sites are no longer likely to pose environmental risk following remediation.

New sea ice estimates over the last 49ky in the Southeast Indian Ocean sector of the Southern Ocean 34th International Geological Congress, Brisbane, Australia, 5-10 August 2012, 2012 (Ref: 15462)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

Although many Quaternary records have allowed the study of major glacial-interglacial change in the … Southern Ocean, Holocene records from deep-sea cores are few and far between and are currently … limited to the South Atlantic. Low sedimentation rates combined with deep seafloors…

Physico-chemical changes in metal-spiked sediments deployed in the field: Implications for the interpretation of in situ studies Chemosphere, 2011 (Ref: 15327)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature
