Stratospheric ozone intrusion events and their impacts on tropospheric ozone in the Southern Hemisphere Atmospheric Chemistry and Physics, 2017 (Ref: 15886)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Stratosphere-to-troposphere transport (STT) provides an important … natural source of ozone to the upper troposphere, but the characteristics of … STT events in the Southern Hemisphere extratropics and their contribution to … the regional tropospheric ozone budget remain poorly constrained. Here…

Response of sea surface temperature to climate change and its influence on the wintertime polar vortex in chemistry-climate models SPARC Workshop Stratospheric Change and its Role in Climate Prediction (SHARP), Berlin, Germany, 16-19 February, 2016, 2016 (Ref: 15754)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

Future changes in the boreal polar vortex under a climate change scenario are still a matter of debate in the scientific community. For example, there is a lack of consensus among models about possible future changes in the frequency of major stratospheric warmings.

Rapid collapse of a sub-Antarctic alpine ecosystem: the role of climate and pathogens Journal of Applied Ecology, 2015 (Ref: 15510)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

1.Ecosystem change is predicted to become more prevalent with climate change. Widespread dieback of cushion plants and bryophytes in alpine fellfield on Macquarie Island may represent such change. Loss of the keystone endemic cushion plant, Azorella macquariensis…

Ecology and management of invasive Poa annua on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island XXXIII SCAR Biennial meeting and open science conference, Auckland, New Zealand, 25-28 August 2014, 2014 (Ref: 15506)
Category 3: Poster

Poa annua is the most widespread alien species in the sub-Antarctic, occurring on all major island groups and is invasive and spreading on the Antarctic Peninsula. P. annua colonises areas disturbed by human activity, seal wallows, penguin rookeries and glacial moraines.

Management of invasive Poa annua in the sub-Antarctic wilderness of Macquarie Island. 19th Australasian Weeds Conference, Hobart, Australia, 1-4 September 2014, 2014 (Ref: 15507)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

Poa annua L. is the most widespread weed in the sub-Antarctic, present on all major island groups and on the Antarctic Peninsula. Its ability to withstand heavy grazing has enabled it to spread significantly on islands with introduced herbivores.

Monitoring the floral development of two alien vascular plants (Poa annua and Cerastium fontanum) along an altitudinal gradient on sub-Antarctic Macquarie Island XXXIII SCAR Biennial meeting and open science conference, Auckland, New Zealand, 25-28 August 2014, 2014 (Ref: 15508)
Category 3: Poster

Floral development of two alien species (Cerastium fontanum, Poa annua) were monitored through the summer of 2013/14 at three different altitudinal sites (coastal, hillside and plateau) on the North eastern end of sub-Antarctica Macquarie Island.

Predicting the weathering of a fuel spill in Antarctic waters Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) Australasia 3rd conference, Melbourne, Australia, 1–3 October 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15330)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

Despite the widespread use and transport of fuels in Antarctica, there is very limited data available on the behaviour and weathering of these fuels in the Antarctic marine environment. The potential impacts of a fuel spill on marine biota are largely unknown.

Concept for a second Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) in Antarctica. SPIE. Proc 2nd Backasog Workshop on Extremely Large Telescopes, Backasog Castle, Sweden, 9-11 September 2003., 2004 (Ref: 11898)
Category 3: Conference paper

While definitive winter measurements for Dome C must await until 2004, on the basis of existing data the Antarctic … Dome sites promise the best conditions on the Earth for many astronomical observations. Because atmospheric … turbulence is largely confined to a ~ 100 m ground layer…

Ecology and management of invasive Poa annua in the sub-Antarctic. Strategic Science in Antarctica Conference, Hobart, Australia, 24-26 June 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15289)
Category 3: Poster

Poa annua is a non-native grass found in Antarctica and the sub-Antarctic. It has a restricted distribution on Heard Island but is common and widespread on Macquarie Island, both World Heritage Areas.

Weeds down under: Invasion of the sub-Antarctic wilderness of Macquarie Island. 17th NSW Weeds Conference, Corowa, Australia, 9-12 September 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15290)
Category 3: Verbal presentation

The sub-Antarctic islands are some of the least inhabited and most protected ecosystems in the world. Due to their isolation and low human visitation they have escaped the worst effects of alien plant invasion.

Weeds down under: Invasion of the sub-Antarctic wilderness of Macquarie Island. Plant Protection Quarterly, 2013 (Ref: 15146)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

The sub-Antarctic islands are some of … the least inhabited and most protected … ecosystems in the world. Due to their … isolation and low human visitation they … have escaped the worst effects of alien … plant invasion.

Parameterization of gravity wave drag in models and the impact on predictions of the Southern Hemisphere stratosphere. 19th annual conference of the Australian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society, Melbourne, Australia, 11-13 February 2013, 2013 (Ref: 15038)

Links … between … changes … in … the … southern … polar … stratosphere … and … tropospheric … climate … have … been … identified … in … both … modelling … and … observational … studies, highlighting … the … importance … of … an … accurate … stratosphere … in … climate … models. However…

DNA-based diet estimation techniques: From toothed whales to Antarctic fish and snails. Australian Marine Sciences Association 48th Annual Conference, 3-7 July 2011, 2011 (Ref: 14944)
Category 3: Abstract

For many species trophic interactions are difficult to study because of their cryptic habits and/or the unfavourable characteristics of samples for traditional diet techniques. DNA-based diet techniques are sensitive…

Major Australian-Antarctic Plate Reorganization at Hawaiian-Emperor Bend Time Science, 2007 (Ref: 13109)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

A marked bend in the Hawaiian-Emperor seamount chain supposedly resulted from a recent major … reorganization of the plate-mantle system there 50 million years ago. Although alternative mantledriven … and plate-shifting hypotheses have been proposed…

Diurnal Variations of Global Thunderstorms and Electrified Shower Clouds and Their Contribution to the Global Electrical Circuit Journal of the Atmospheric Sciences, 2010 (Ref: 14045)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

The long-standing mainstay of support for C. T. R. Wilson’s global circuit hypothesis is the similarity … between the diurnal variation of thunderstorm days in universal time and the Carnegie curve of electrical … potential gradient.
