The Antarctic climate-diversity-invasion hypothesis (ACDI) predicts that in Antarctic soil systems, climate change should lead to increases in the abundance and diversity of indigenous assemblages. Where biological invasions have occurred, however…
Sea-ice surface temperature from atmospheric reanalysis has been used as an indicator of ice melt and climate change. However, its performance in atmospheric reanalyses is not fully understood in Antarctica. Here, we quantified biases in six widely-used reanalyses using satellite observations…
Missing gravity wave drag near 60 degrees south has been proposed as the cause of the common cold bias in modelled southern polar stratospheric temperatures [McLandress et al. 2012]. Potential gravity wave momentum sources around those latitudes, such as jets…
A decade of radiosonde observations of wind and temperature in the troposphere and lower stratosphere have made it possible to compile a climatology of low-frequency gravity waves above Davis, Antarctica (69S, 78E). Wave characteristics, extracted using wavelet analysis [Zink and Vincent, 2001]…
A decade of radiosonde observations of wind and temperature in the troposphere and lower … stratosphere have made it possible to compile a climatology of low-frequency gravity waves … above Davis, Antarctica (69°S, 78°E). Wave characteristics, extracted using wavelet … analysis [Zink and Vincent…
The global distribution, sources, and propagation of atmospheric waves in the … equatorial upper troposphere and lower stratosphere were investigated using an … atmospheric general circulation model with T106L60 resolution (120-km horizontal … and 550-m vertical resolution).
A solar occultation sensor, the Improved Limb Atmospheric Spectrometer (ILAS)-II, measured 5890 vertical profiles of ozone concentrations in the stratosphere and lower … mesosphere and of other species from January to October 2003. The measurement latitude … coverage was 54–71°N and 64–88°S…
In order to improve our understanding of wintertime polar ozone losses, two ozonesonde Match campaigns were performed. The first one was carried out in the Arctic winter 2002/03. About 450 co-ordinated ozonesondes were launched from late November 2002 to March 2003.
To measure chemical induced ozone loss in the Arctic lower stratosphere the Match method was developed. Trajectory calculations based on stratospheric wind fields of the European Center of Medium-range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) are used to track and to predict the ways of air parcels.
A biological/oceanographic survey was conducted around the Antarctic Divergence (AD) off Adelie Land, Antarctica by the RTV Umitaka-Maru III of Tokyo University of Fisheries in the 1995/1996 Austral summer. Investigations were included (1) characteristics of oceanic structure, (2)…
