Monitoring Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) distribution in the Southern Ocean: environmental DNA (eDNA) adds to the toolbox Frontiers in Marine Science, 2025 (Ref: 17307)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba Dana) is a key species of the Southern Ocean ecosystem, immensely abundant and targeted by the krill fishery. For their sustainable management, krill distribution and biomass estimates are required, typically achieved through acoustic-trawl surveys.

The cross-cutting role of Ocean Decade Challenge 7 in achieving a sustainable and resilient global ocean observing system ICES Journal of Marine Science, 2025 (Ref: 17458)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

With more than 90% of global warming occurring in the ocean, sea level rise doubling in the past 30 years, and the ever-increasing frequency and intensity of extreme events, ocean observations are essential for understanding and addressing some of these most pressing global challenges.

Benefits of a landfast ice representation on simulated Antarctic sea ice and coastal polynya dynamics. Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2025 (Ref: 17437)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

The Antarctic coastal marine region is a unique and highly complex environment, of which landfast ice and polynyas are key features, especially in the context of dense water formation. Current large-scale ocean-sea ice models used in climate studies simulate hardly any Antarctic landfast ice…

Unlocking Southern Ocean Under-Ice Seasonality With a New Monthly Climatology Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans, 2025 (Ref: 17283)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

The advent of under-ice profiling float and biologging techniques has enabled year-round observation of the Southern Ocean and its Antarctic margin. These under-ice data are often overlooked in widely used oceanographic datasets…

Validation of presence-only models for conservation planning and the application to whales in a multiple-use marine park Ecological Applications, 2020 (Ref: 17242)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Identification of species' Biologically Important Areas (BIAs) is fundamental to conservation planning and species distribution models (SDMs) are a powerful tool commonly used to do this.

Observed water-mass characteristics and circulation off Prydz Bay, East Antarctica. Frontiers in Marine Science, 2024 (Ref: 17153)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Circulation and water masses in the greater Prydz Bay region were surveyed in the austral summer 2021 (January-March) during the ‘Trends in Euphausiids off Mawson, Predators and Oceanography’ (TEMPO) experiment, and are described in this paper.

Drivers of phytoplankton distribution, abundance and community composition off East Antarctica, from 55-80°E (CCAMLR Division 58.4.2 East). Frontiers in Marine Science, 2024 (Ref: 17151)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Southern Ocean phytoplankton form the base of the Antarctic food web, influencing higher trophic levels through biomass and community structure.

Committed future ice-shelf melt. Nature Climate Change, 2023 (Ref: 17109)
Authors:
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

The collapse of the West Antarctic Ice Sheet is a worrying climate tipping point, with the potential to raise global sea level by up to 5.3 metres. Now, an assessment of future climate scenarios suggests that accelerated melting of ice shelves in West Antarctica is locked in…

Report on fish by-catch in the exploratory toothfish fishery in Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2 between 2014 and 2020 CCAMLR Thirty-ninth Meeting of the Scientific Committee, Online, 22 - 26 October 2020, Delegation of France and Australia (only AAD authors listed), 2020 (Ref: 16962)
Authors:
Category 2: International meeting papers

In this paper, we report on fish by-catch during exploratory fishing activities undertaken in Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2 during the period 2014 to 2020. Fish by-catch comprised 12 species or groups of species. In 2019 and 2020, exploratory fishing occurred exclusively in research block 58.4.

Preliminary integrated stock assessment for the Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) fishery in Divisions 58.41 and 58.4.2 CCAMLR Thirty-ninth Meeting of the Scientific Committee, Online, 22 - 26 October 2020, Delegation of Australia (only AAD authors listed), 2020 (Ref: 16961)

We present an update of ageing and estimates of biological parameters, and of the single-region integrated stock assessment for Antarctic toothfish (Dissostichus mawsoni) fishery in CCAMLR Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2. The update of ageing and estimates of biological parameters addresses Milestone 1.

Continuing research in the Dissostichus mawsoni exploratory fishery in East Antarctica (Divisions 58.4.1 and 58.4.2) from 2018/19 to 2021/22; Research plan under CM 21-02, paragraph 6(iii) CCAMLR Working Group on Statistics, Assessments and Modelling - Virtual Meeting, 28 June to 2 July 2021.
