As whales recover from commercial exploitation, they are increasing in abundance in habitats that they have been absent from for decades. However, studying the recovery and habitat use patterns of whales, particularly in remote and inaccessible regions…
Southern hemisphere humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae, SHHW) breeding populations follow a high-fidelity Antarctic krill (Euphausia superba) diet while feeding in distinct sectors of the Southern Ocean.
Ecosystem dynamics at the northwest Antarctic Peninsula are driven by interactions between physical and biological processes. For example, baleen whale populations are recovering from commercial harvesting against the backdrop of rapid climate change…
Antarctic minke whales (Balaenoptera bonaerensis, AMW) are an abundant, ice-dependent species susceptible to rapid climatic changes occurring in parts of the Antarctic. Here, we used remote biopsy samples and estimates of length derived from unoccupied aircraft system (UAS)…
The ‘Norfolk Meeting’ was held in November 2005 as a joint IWC SO GLOBEC initiative to … outline a program of work to expedite integrative circumpolar analyses of existing cetacean … data series for the Antarctic. Our aim was to use the results of these analyses to summarise, on a circumpolar scale…

The International Whaling Commission (IWC) and Southern Ocean Global Ocean Ecosystem Dynamics (SO GLOBEC) program are collaborating on an ecosystem approach to understand baleen whale distributions in Antarctica.
The first three cruises in the 'year round' Southern Ocean GLOBEC series for 2001-2002 were conducted from March - June 2001. International Whaling Commission researchers participated in all three cruises (Gould LMG 01-03 USA mooring cruise…
The review of southern hemisphere minke whales is currently a priority work item within the International Whaling Commission (IWC) Scientific Committee (SC). Reliable abundance estimation is an important component of the review process.
Preliminary results from the IWC collaborative studies conducted on the 2001 winter survey and the 2002 late summer mooring cruise with the US SO GLOBEC program are presented. Sea-ice cover was significantly more extensive earlier in the season in 2002.
