Fuel spills in Antarctic waters are increasingly likely with the rise in shipping in the region related to tourism and research activities, both of which require and transport large quantities of fuel. While fuel dispersants are not currently used in the management of fuel spills in Antarctica…
This study presents the first examination of the effect of both temperature and salinity on fertilisation and development in an Antarctic echinoderm. Previous studies on Antarctic species have not investigated the combined effects of temperature and salinity, focusing on only single factor studies…
Simultaneous effects of ocean acidification and temperature change in Antarctic environments warrant investigation as little is known about the synergistic consequences of these parameters on Antarctic benthic species. Fertilisation success, embryo cleavage…
The diversity of parasites found on Nyctiphanes simplex and Nematoscelis difficilis … (Order Euphausiacea) was compared during 10 oceanographic cruises made off both coasts of the … Baja California peninsula, Mexico. We tested the hypothesis that N.
A hot water drill was used to penetrate 480 m of ice to reveal a diverse benthic assemblage, dominated by … suspension-feeding invertebrates, under the Amery Ice Shelf (East Antarctica) at a location 100 km from open … water and at a depth of 775 m below sea level (840 m below the ice shelf surface)…
Macquarie Island is an oceanic island located 1000k m south-east of Tasmania. The island, which lies close … to but north of the Antarctic Convergence is the southern most island in the world with a fairly complete cover of … vegetation. However…
Fifty-two echinoderm species are recorded from off Macquarie Island and the Macquarie Ridge in the Southern Ocean. One new asteroid Odontohenricia anarea sp. nov. and one new holothurian Trachythyone nelladana sp. nov. are described. The asteroid genus Calvasterias is synonymised with Anasterias.
The origin of echinoderms from Macquarie Island in the Southern Ocean is analyzed through a novel application of multivariate statistics. Ordinations are produced from a combination of species distribution, bathymetric, habitat and life history data in order to assess patterns of migration.
