We conducted a scanning electron microscopic survey of morphological variations in the … calcareous nanoplankton species Emiliania huxleyi in Southern Ocean surface water samples … collected along a transect from 43 to 64° S and 141 to 145° E during November 2001, October to … February 2002/2003…
Australia and New Zealand have interests in, and some responsibilities for, a vast area of the Southern Ocean and the Antarctic continent to our south. These regions are integral components of the Earth system, directly coupled to the climate system, global sea level, biogeochemical cycles…
We present measurements and analysis of the isotopic composition (ä15Nbulk, ä15Ná, ä15Nâ, and ä18O) of nitrous oxide in 50 samples of tropospheric air collected at Cape Grim, Tasmania between 1978 and 2005 and in 11 samples of firn air from Law Dome, Antarctica…
Mid-latitude Digisonde Doppler velocities, auroral electrojet (AE) indices and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning strokes during August 2003–2004 were used to study the perturbations in the F-region … vertical drift associated with terrestrial thunderstorms. A superposed epoch analysis (SEA)…
ABSTRACT. The loss of methanesulphonic acid (MSA) from stored ice cores can be significant over … typical storage times, with diffusion to the ice-core surface controlling the loss.
In Polar Regions, sea ice has a marked influence on interactions between the coupled ocean-atmosphere system. The contribution of the sea ice zone to the global flux of dimethylsulphide (DMS), a trace sulphur gas implicated in climate change, has been of interest for over a decade.
The CRAC-ICE project aims at monitoring the calving of the Mertz Glacier tongue in East … Antarctica, an ice tongue which extends 140km from its grounding line. Legresy et al. (2004)…
Lead (Pb) isotope ratios were measured in the marine macroalga Iridaea cordata collected from four locations … in the Windmill Islands, East Antarctica. Based on the masses of thalli collected, samples analysed in … this study were likely to be a mixture of one and two year old thalli.
We discuss an upcoming international airborne survey targeting two of the East Antarctica Ice Sheet's (EAIS) enigmatic … subglacial basins. Using a multi-instrumented long range aircraft we will address key issues in the origin and fate of … Earth's largest ice sheet.
Preliminary results are presented from the first validation of geophysical data products (ice concentration, snow thickness on sea ice (hs) and ice temperature (TI ) from the NASA EOS Aqua AMSRE sensor, in East Antarctica (in September–October 2003).
Measurements of the microwave backscatter coefficient in the ku-band have been obtained over the Antarctic snow cover by the NSCAT wind scatterometer instrument on the ADEOS satellite from August 1996 to June 1997. The instrument has six antennas arranged with two directed forwards…
Measurements of the microwave backscatter from the Antarctic ice sheet have been obtained by the single-sided, right-looking, C-band wind scatterometer carried by the ERS-1 and 2 satellites and by the dual-sided, ku-band NSCAT instrument on ADEOS.
This paper describes an image analysis technique developed to identify icebergs depicted in synthetic aperture radar images of Antarctica, and to determine the outlines of these icebergs. The technique uses a pixel bonding process to delineate the edges of the icebergs.
Microwave backscatter from the Antarctic snow cover depends on the surface roughness, properties and structure within the snow cover, and moisture content. Small increases in moisture content produce a significant reduction in backscatter.
The 500 km wide swath of the right-looking ERS wind scatterometer and the orbital geometry allows measurement of the microwave backscatter of all the Antarctic region north of latitude 79°S.
