Ice cores provide some of the richest archives of past climate behaviour available to us. The … use of ice core data has become a foundation of climate study, and in Antarctica, with the … sparse, short instrumental record, ice core climate data is of particular importance.
Dome A is the highest point on the surface of the East Antarctic ice sheet and the highest … ice feature in Antarctica. In January 2005 a team from the Chinese National Antarctic … Research Expeditions (CHINARE)…
Ice shelves play a major role in the discharge of ice from Antarctica both from iceberg calving and basal melt, and processes of ocean-ice interaction beneath the shelf are of increasing scientific interest.
Surface snow accumulation along the Chinese ITASE traverse line was measured using … bamboo stakes. Stakes along the initial (coastal) 300 km of the line were installed in 1997. The stake network was extended to 465 km in 1998, to 1100 km in 1999 and finally to 1228 … km (from the coast to Dome A)…
Heard Island is a subantarctic island located at 530 06’ S 730 30’ E in the southern Indian … Ocean. There are 29 glacierised basins on Heard Island, which cover 70% of this 367 km2 … island. Since 1947 there has been significant retreat of the glaciers especially on the north … east coast.
The Australian Antarctic Division has operated automatic weather stations (AWS) at a … number of sites on the East Antarctica ice sheet for various periods of time since 1984. These AWS measure air temperature and wind speed at three levels above the surface, nominally 1 m…
The subsurface character and boundary conditions of the East Antarctic Ice Sheet (EAIS) remain largely unknown although they are critical to ice sheet modeling and our … understanding of the EAIS's role in global climate and sea level change.
An ice core, drilled near the margin of the Law Dome ice cap at Cape Folger, has been analysed for trace chemical content.
The internal structure of the Law Dome ice cap is being investigated by studying ice cores obtained from several sites along the summit - Cape Folger line. Profiles of measured physical properties for four of the ice cores from near the margin of the ice cap are presented.
