Summary

During the austral summer 1995/95 a cetacean sightings line transect survey was conducted on a platform of opportunity provided by Australian National Antarctic Research Expeditions krill hydroacoustic and oceanography survey of CCAMLR Division 58.4 (parts of IWC Area IV & V). The cetacean survey component used a double platform method, and recorded a wide range of subjective and objective environmental parameters throughout survey and at the time of sightings. A wide range of physical and biological programs were conducted on board simultaneously. All data from all projects will be analysed, mapped and incorporated into a comprehensive report. The most commonly sighted species were humpback whales (Megaptera novaeangliae) which were only observed in Area IV.
