Summary
Over the summer period of December 1997/January 1998, a program of field work was undertaken as part of a research project to develop numerical models of the marine waters into which wastewaters from Casey Station, Antarctica are discharged. Field data collected includes wind speed and direction, current speed and direction, water level, barometric pressure, air temperature and dew point. The data present in this report covers the same time period and was analysed using spectral analyis, principal component analysis as wall as basic statistical analyses. the main results show that the currents are dominated by the winds in the more exposed sea areas, the tidal currents are insignificant and the mean water level inversely related to barometric pressure. Estimates of the horizontal eddy viscosity obtained from drogue tracking during fine weather were about 0.05 m2/s for wind speeds less than 1 m/s, to about 0.3 m2/s for wind speeds between 1 and 5 m/s.
