Summary
A new Scanning Doppler Imager (SDI) has been constructed and recently located to Mawson, Antarctica. The SDI is a separation scanning Fabry-Perot Interferometer (FPI) coupled to an all-sky lens and imaging detector. This permits rapid scanning of the interference fringes over most of the sky. Neutral wind and temperature fields can be generated for the entire sky on time scales of minutes, an order of magnitude faster than traditional FPIs. The spatial resolution permits the study of meso-scale neutral structures, either in the wind field, or temperature distribution due to localized Joule or particle heating. The temporal resolution permits observations over the entire field of view during active geomagnetic conditions, something previously not possible with traditional FPIs. The Mawson SDI is located under the Kerguelen and Syowa-East SuperDARN radars fields-of view, permitting the study of meso-scale ion-neutral coupling. Preliminary data are presented from observations starting March 2007.
