Summary

Measurements of mesosphere and lower thermosphere (MLT) winds obtained using a 2 MHz radar at Davis (68.6S, 78.0E) from 1993 to the present have allowed the compilation of a climatology of planetary wave activity and horizontal momentum fluxes. Concurrent measurements of temperature inferred from Hydroxyl emissions have allowed heat fluxes to be calculated [Murphy et al., Long-period planetary waves in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere above Davis, Antarctica, JASTP 69, 2118-2138, 2007]. However, the latter were limited to near 87km and to optically dark (non-summer) months. Reconstructions of temperature time series from satellite observations have allowed this climatology to be extended in height and time. Wave-number decompositions of space-based temperature observations are recombined for the latitude and longitude of Davis to provide temperature data over the full radar height range of (80-94 km) and throughout the year. The extended climatology of planetary wave horizontal heat and momentum fluxes will be presented and discussed. In addition, the character of these fluxes at times of perturbations to the background state (such as during times of zonal wind reversal) will be described.
