Summary
A consequence of the wave-number rich tidal activity that has been observed in the southern polar MLT is that the horizontal flux of horizontal momentum (u'v') is likely to be non-zero. This quantity is affected by the phase angle between the zonal and meridional wind perturbations. In an environment where multiple wavenumbers are present, the sum of all tidal components can be forced out of phase quadrature by variations in the relative magnitudes of u' and v' as well as by their phase differences. This, in turn, admits the possibility that the horizontal divergence of this quantity may be non-zero. A horizontal divergence of the tidal momentum flux should elicit a response in the background flow. In this poster, both u'v' and its divergence are calculated using the wavenumber resolved tidal amplitudes derived from wind measurements from four Antarctic MF radars. The dynamical response of the MLT to horizontal momentum flux is considered in relation to both the zonal mean and longitudinally varying forcing.
