Summary

Analysis of the quasi-stationary planetary wave (QSW) influence on total ozone column (TOC) distribution over 60°N and 60°S latitudes is presented. TOMS version 8 total ozone data for years 1979-2003 were used to compare the vortex-edge TOC distribution in both hemispheres. NCEP-NCAR reanalysis data were examined to reveal the southern/northern hemisphere distinction in the tropopause relation to the TOC distribution disturbed by QSW. The QSW spectral characteristics show the dominance of wave 1 and combination of wave 1/wave 2 at both sub-polar latitudes during the winterspring period. In decadal changes, the longitudinal phase of the QSW minimum moved eastward at 60°S in Antarctica, whilst in North the QSW maximum moved in same direction at 60°N.
