Summary
: SuperDARN (SuperDual Auroral Radar Network) provides multi-point observations of ionospheric flows over both southern and northern hemisphere auroral regions and similarly GPS TEC and tomography observations provide images of structures in the ionosphere and plasmasphere. When combined with multi-point measurements from satellite systems such as Cluster and THEMIS they provide a powerful way of investigating magnetosphere- ionosphere coupling, particularly for studying the processes that trigger and operate during magnetospheric substorms. Simultaneous multi-point ground-based optical measurements of thermospheric winds provide a means of studying the final transfer of energy from the magnetosphere-ionosphere system to the neutral atmosphere. This paper will consider some of the recent studies with these techniques, particularly in the southern hemisphere. Some discussion of future possible studies will also be given
