Summary

It is now clear that Georg [von] Neumayer (enobled after this time) spent time in Tasmania between 8 and 19 April 1864. He was near the end of his five-year sojourn in Victoria where he conducted a major geomagnetic study of Victoria and established the Flagstaff Observatory on the site of the current Flagstaff Gardens. His visit to Tasmania was to re-measure the magnetic parameters first documented by members of the 1840/41 James Clark Ross expedition at Rossbank Observatory on the grounds of present-day Tasmanian Government House, shortly prior to its construction. This paper contains a translation of a 1905 German account of his visit to Tasmania and contains the results of his magnetic studies here, including details of the instruments used. It also includes reference to a Tasmanian (Launceston) media report of a presentation to the Melbourne Chamber of Commerce.
