>The Southern Ocean is characterised by the unique Antarctic Circumpolar Current (ACC) which flows eastward uninterrupted around the Antarctic continent. In theory then, the species composition of zooplankton would be expected to be the same in any part of the current…
The depth distributions of eight groups of phytoplankton were determined along eight north-south transects between longitudes 80„aE and 150„aE, from 63„aS to the sea ice edge or beyond.
Concentrations of dimethylsulphoniopropionate (DMSP) were measured in seven pack ice cores from three sites in eastern Antarctica to determine their relation to algal pigments, nutrients (nitrate, silicate and phosphate) and bulk salinity. The algal groups haptophytes…
Seals that survived their first year were on average 2% and 4% heavier at birth and at weaning than the “non-survivors”. First year survival rates were also calculated for weaners in the top quartile of weaning masses, these weaners had higher survival rates than those in the light quartile (71.
Elephant seals were immobilized intravenously with a mixture of tiletamine and zolazepam at a rate of 0.5 mg/kg. This provided a satisfactory degree of anaesthesia with no side effects. Induction, duration and recovery times were short which proved advantageous to researchers and animals.
Around 145 different non-marine algae have been identified from the Windmill Islands region, Antarctica. About 24 of these occur in the snow. Nearly half of these, which includes all the dominant snow algae, complete their life cycles in the snow and do not grow elsewhere.
The dive duration of 16 underyearling (6-12 months old) southern elephant seals during their second trip to sea was investigated using geolocating time-depth recorders. Underyearling seals had a lesser diving ability, with respect to duration and depth, than adult southern elephant seals.
