Notes on the flora, vertebrate fauna and biological significance of Beaufort Island, Ross Sea, Antarctica Polarforschung, 1999 (Ref: 8736)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Beaufort Island, Ross Sea, Antarctica, is a Specially Protected Area originally designated on account of, and still supporting, a small winter sea ice breeding colony of Emperor penguins, a large summer breeding colony of Adélie penguins, and several colonies of Skuas. A substantial area of moss…

Population structure change of Salpa thompsoni from austral mid-summer to autumn. Polar Biology, 1999 (Ref: 8727)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Changes in the population structure of Salpa thompsoni from austral mid-summer to autumn off the Adelie Coast, Antarctica, were examined using cluster analysis based on reproductive states. S.

Snow Algae of the Windmill Islands, Continental Antarctica: Desmotetra aureospora , sp. nov. and D. antarctica , comb. nov. (Chlorophyta). Journal of Phycology, 2001 (Ref: 9611)
Authors:
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Two cryophilic Desmotetra species, D. aureospora, sp. nov., and D. antarctica (Fritsch) Ling appear to be unique to the southern hemisphere snow ecosystem, or at least to the Windmill Is. region, Antarctica.

Mirrors in Ice: Fulmarine petrels and Antarctic ecosystems, 2001 (Ref: 9590)
Category 3: Thesis, higher degree

The thesis contains 13 research papers, of which 10 published and 3 in various stages of submission/acceptance. Papers in chapters 2-7 deal with results from ship-based research on top predator communities or individual bird species in the pelagic environment.

Novel intact glycolipids in sediments from an Antarctic lake (Ace Lake) Organic Geochemistry, 2001 (Ref: 9624)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Two novel glycolipids, docosanyl 3-O-methyl-alpha - rhamnopyranoside and docosanyl 3-O-methylxylopyranoside, were identified as the most abundant GC-amenable components of extracts of sediments of Ace Lake, an Antarctic meromictic lake.

Arbovirus of Marine Mammals: a New Alphavirus Isolated from the Elephant Seal Louse, Lepidophthirus macrorhini . Journal of Virology, 2001 (Ref: 9615)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

A novel alphavirus was isolated from the louse Lepidophthirus macrorhini, collected from southern elephant seals, Mirounga leonina, on Macquarie Island, Australia. The virus displayed classic alphavirus ultrastructure and appeared to be serologically different from known Australasian alphaviruses.

Easily measured call attributes can detect vocal differences between Weddell seals from two areas. Bioacousics: The International Journal of Animal Sound and its Recording, 2001 (Ref: 9738)
Category 1: Peer-reviewed literature

Underwater vocalizations of Weddell seals (Leptonychotes weddellii) were recorded approximately 1400 km apart at Casey and Davis, Antarctica. Recordings were made during the 1992 and 1997 breeding seasons at Davis and during the 1997 season at Casey.

Community structure and psychrophily in Antarctic ecosystems Microbial Biosystems: New Frontiers, Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Microbial Ecology, Halifax, Canada, 2000 (Ref: 9879)
Category 3: Poster

Molecular based and traditional microbiological techniques were utilized to determine thestructure and degree of cold adaptation of a variety of Antarctic bacterial communities.

Phylogenetic diversity of picocyanobacteria in Arctic and Antarctic ecosystems Microbial Biosystems: New Frontiers, Proceedings of the 8th International Symposium on Microbial Ecology, Halifax Canada, 2000 (Ref: 9878)
Category 3: Conference paper

Oxyphotobacteria ascribed to the genera Synechococcus and Synechocystis are widely distributed in Arctic and Antarctic lakes, yet they are poorly represented in the marine polar environment. Arctic lakes contain phycoerythrin-rich as well as phycocyanin-rich … picoplankton…
