Comments

What a spectacular day we woke to this morning, with a light sprinkling of snow on the plateau and the cloud rising high enough for full sun to break through.
(If you haven't already, have a look at Pete Harmsen's photo of one of the helicopters taking off at sunrise on the AAD's Facebook page.)
In almost ideal weather, we made great progress through the morning.
LARCs delivered 30 concrete slabs to shore for the Macquarie Island Modernisation Program and helicopters took several groups of people and 56 sling loads of cargo, including all the station's required frozen food for the year.
With a change expected in the afternoon the helicopters made the most of the good weather, delivering a platform for the Search and Rescue cache (strategically located rescue supplies) at Three Ways.
By about 2.15pm the change had swept through and we were back to winds of about 37 knots. That ended all LARC and helicopter activity and all attention turned to getting things ready for a quick start tomorrow.
You can see why they call these latitudes the Furious Fifties.
