The day started with mist and high wind gusts again, which put paid to our plans to get the LARCs in the water in the morning, but that just gave everyone a chance to have a good lunch before really getting started.
Those waiting it out in the Observation Lounge were rewarded with the sight of a seal swimming around to starboard and orcas on the port side, albeit a fair distance away.
By 1pm the winds had eased and it was all systems go. Three LARCs and an Inflatable Rescue Boat (IRB) were lowered down and the decision was made to start transferring expeditioners to shore by helicopter.
The first group donned their immersion suits – what a fun exercise that is - and were away by 2.30pm, the BK117 making the trip to shore in about a minute. The cloud descended after the third helicopter run, so we pivoted to passenger transfers by LARC. We also discharged critical refueling equipment, surveying gear for the Macquarie Island Modernisation Project (MIMP), and some medical supplies.
It was great to see resupply get started after what felt like a lot of weather-related uncertainty and to see everyone jump to it with such enthusiasm. Tonight, a number of the new Macca team are settling in for their first night in their new home.
If the weather continues to cooperate, we'll do it all again tomorrow. Happy Mother's Day to all the wonderful women in our lives.
REGARDS: Brendan, Jenn, and Nick
