Every day during resupply operations are planned, refined and implemented or not, as like what happened today. The weather forecast was good enough to plan operations but not good enough to actually do them. It was all about the wind, too much to operate the shoreside crane, so attention turned to maintenance onboard and Station preparing for the incoming blizzard.
Nuyina will make way for open water and prepare for the increasing winds and seas that this low weather system is expected to bring. The saying of "batten down the hatches" will take on new meaning for some.
For those interested in the history of nautical language, the 1867 encyclopaedia reports, "Battens of the hatches: Long narrow laths serving by the help of nailing to confine the edges of the tarpaulins, and keep them close down to the sides of the hatchways in bad weather."
