The approach to Mawson is an area famous for its Jade icebergs and today there has been a few beauties. Icebergs are normally blue or white but reports of jade or emerald icebergs date back to the 1900s.
Current research indicates that Jade icebergs are formed when mineral rich seawater freezes to the underside of an ice shelf in layers and then breaks off and floats away. Further investigation after sampling was conducted from the Amery Ice Shelf suggest that iron oxides in seawater are the likely cause of these rare and beautiful bergs.
They are a sight to behold, not that the typically white or blue icebergs are not spectacular, it's more the addition of patterns in these intense colours that make them so special.
