Before we knew it, the Expeditioners boarded RSV Nuyina, went through a ship's safety briefing, tour, emergency drill and then were underway. Nuyina gracefully left Macquarie wharf with a marine pilot embarked for the trip down the river on a beautiful evening.
Everyone was excited and ready to go and the evening saw people enjoy the last sights of Hobart as they readied their cabin for the open ocean. Nuyina's crew could not have been more welcoming on our first day underway as many expeditioners found there footing and their way around.
Today saw the beginning of marine science including phytoplankton (microalgae) sampling and the first of many CPR (Continuous Plankton Recorder) tows. The weather has been kind, the ship riding well. Tonight might test a few with an increase of wind and seas but it is the Southern Ocean after all.
