The final fuel tank at the Davis fuel farm is currently being filled from the hose that runs 1.3km from the ship to the shore. On completion we will have delivered more than 730,000l of SAB (Special Antarctic Blend diesel) to Davis, keeping the lights on for another year. Pumping of the fuel is an around the clock operation involving more than 40 people, on various shifts, in various locations around station, on the ship and in-between. Adelie penguins on their regular transit across the ice become troubled to find a fuel hose across their path, and only after much consternation and contemplation do they find the resolve to make the leap over, much to the entertainment of all. If conditions remain favourable, later today we intend to recommence loading RTA (Return to Australia) cargo, our last resupply objective.
