True to forecast, the afternoon brought improving winds and sunshine. This provided the opportunity for the vessel to break a track into the ice and then deploy teams to set about measuring the thickness of this ice. Our previous tracks are showing up on satellite images and we speculate as to whether there are people out there wondering how and why these tracks exist. Today brought us another stunning day and again the team is out on the ice taking measurements. At present a 1 cubic metre block of ice is being cut out of the fast ice which will then be tested for its strength and provide an indication of the resistance this ice presents to the vessel moving through. Again, all is being undertaken under the watchful eyes of curious Adelie and Emperor penguins.
