While the numbers say we have covered 94nm in the last 24 hours, we are only 56 nm closer to the particular area of ice we hope to run some tests in. Heavy pack ice had meant some extra dodging and weaving. This ice has been up to 4m thick (according to the fancy EM widget suspended on the bow of the vessel). Travel through pack ice is mesmerising, watching the ice crack, break up and big chunks turning over as the ship glides by. Yesterday afternoon that turned over ice also brought with it a glut of krill, presenting a feasting platter for the petrels, and a great opportunity for the keen photographers out on the helideck. Today it was the emperor penguins turn to steal the show as they enjoyed a fishing jolly in some open water next to the vessel before leaping out on to the ice.
