We currently find ourselves stopped. No need for alarm, this is a very intentional stop. The technical team that we have onboard with us conducting the "Ice Trials" are setting up an EM (Electromagnetic) conductivity device. This device is mounted on the front of the ship and uses magnetic fields to measure conductivity of seawater and sea ice and from this can determine ice thickness. To calibrate this device, we need to do this over open water, rather than when we are moving through a mix of ice and water. We expect the pack ice concentration to continue to increase in the coming days, providing the perfect environment for these tests. The "Ice Trials" component of this voyage are to prove the performance of Nuyina in ice (manoeuvring, range, speed etc.) against the design requirements for the vessel. While we have some great qualitative data around performance in ice from previous voyages, these trials will provide some very precise quantitative measures. We are all looking forward to witnessing the ship being put through its paces in the coming days.
