The noticeably cooler air today indicates that we are now close to the Antarctic Convergence. This convergence is a zone, approx. 30 – 50km wide, where the warmer sub Antarctic waters meet the cold, Antarctic waters. The meeting of these two bodies of waters create a circulation and upwell resulting in a region of very high in marine productivity, especially Antarctic krill. While we have not yet seen any krill hunting whales today, we have had several sooty albatrosses happily gliding alongside the vessel, much to the delight of the keen photographers onboard. Field training continues, with lessons in tying knots and other rope trickery. Slowly but surely more and more expeditioners are emerging from their cabins after a few days of finding their sea legs
