The presentation last night was called 'Mawson after Dark'. It was a fascinating show of auroras taken during winter at Mawson in 2015. The colours and movement were spectacular. We thank the expeditioner who took this incredible footage for being kind enough to share it with us all so we may show our family and friends.
As stated in yesterday's sitrep an environmental briefing was held today which provides information on how we play a part in keeping 'aliens' out of Antarctica. It begins with not taking any seeds, grasses, dirt etc to Antarctica on our clothes, boots, equipment – all going ashore must take their gear through a cleaning process unless it is brand new. We also viewed a DVD telling us of distances to keep away from wildlife and the effect of disturbance can have on penguins and other wildlife. We are also taught what to do if penguins approach us as they are as inquisitive as we are. I wish to thank our watercraft operators for operating the cleaning station – they are a great support for the Voyage Management team.
It is almost an hypnotic feeling as we gently roll over the ocean – it is definitely a lot more comfortable than the rougher seas we encountered early in the voyage.
Cheers
