Comments

We made slow progress overnight breaking through the fast-ice. The ice is approximately 1.5m thick, but very hard to break. Our first period of prolonged sunshine for the voyage this morning (from 0400hrs ship time) instilled hope for suitable flying conditions today. Preparations are under-way to fly some expeditioners in to station that have priority work programs and / or a priority role in resupply, and to bring the Station Leader and his Deputy out to the ship to brief all on board. For the first-timers, excitement at stepping on to the Antarctic continent is palpable. This is it! They have almost reached their new home for the coming summer months, or in some cases for the next year. We remain hopeful we can deploy some expeditioners to station today in between continuing to break ice as we progress to our mooring position.
Regards,
Karin, Sharon & Adam
